Russia Seen as Biggest Security Threat by Albanians

Albania's Security Barometer 2020 Shows Growing Concern

Survey Highlights Fear of Russian Influence

The WEB Albania Security Barometer 2020 has revealed that Russia is perceived by Albanians as the country posing the greatest security threat to their nation. The survey, conducted by the Albanian Institute for International Studies, found that a majority of Albanians view Russia as an adversary, expressing concerns about its influence and potential aggression.

Despite being a NATO member, Albania lacks its own fighter jets. In an effort to address this shortcoming, the country has reopened a Soviet-era air base, which is expected to receive NATO aircraft in the future. The move has been seen as a response to growing concerns about Russian activity in the region.

Albania has joined the European Union in imposing sanctions on Russia, including asset freezes and travel bans. Foreign Minister Olta Xhacka stated that the sanctions are a necessary step to deter Russian aggression and uphold international law.

The Sino-Soviet split of 1960 led to a division within the international Communist movement. The split had a significant impact on Albania, which had aligned itself with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The country has since moved away from its previous close ties with Russia and has become increasingly integrated with the West.
