Millwall Football Club and the Montenegro Football Association have announced the tragic passing of goalkeeper Matija Sarkic. The 26-year-old reportedly fell ill while on international duty with Montenegro.

Sarkic, who earned nine caps for Montenegro, made nine saves in his final international outing, a 2-0 defeat to Euro 2024 hopefuls. He had also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Livingston during the 2019-20 season.

Millwall released a statement expressing their devastation at Sarkic's passing. The club praised him as a "talented goalkeeper and an exceptional young man." Montenegro Football Association President Dejan Savicevic called Sarkic "a great professional and an even better person."

Tributes Pour In

Former Millwall defender Micah Richards paid tribute to his former teammate, remembering him as a "brilliant character" and a "top goalkeeper." Premier League referee Bobby Madley shared a heartwarming tribute, recalling a funny moment they shared. Sarkic's death has shocked the football community, with numerous clubs and players expressing their condolences. Millwall fans have gathered outside the Den to lay flowers and pay their respects to the fallen goalkeeper.

The circumstances surrounding Sarkic's death are still under investigation. Montenegro daily newspaper Vijesti reported that he died in an apartment in Podgorica, Montenegro.
